Mr. Goodman - 5th Grade

A typical day in my 5th grade class.

The students use the kindles first thing in the morning during AIM time.
They take notes, summarize, define words, and make predictions directly on the kindle.

In reading the students use moodle to complete assignments and post summaries of guided reading books.

In language arts the students are using the web site to access their work and complete the assignments for a distance learning figurative language unit with Kratzer.

In math the students use netbooks, usb drives, the website, and the online book to participate in the class.

In social studies two classes use moodle to complete and submit their work.

Pete & C
Introduction: Jaindl was the first "Green" building built in the Parkland School District. The doors of the building opened in 2010. It was the "Green" concept that helped drive my insturction to be delivered in a paperless format to students of the 21st Century.

Creating the Paperless Assignment: Inititally, I used my website to deliver the paperless assignments to my students. Over time I realized this worked, but was not efficient enough. It was not until the second marking period that the process became more streamlined for me and them with the introduction of the moodle program.

Utilizing the Kindle in cojunction with Moodle to create a Paperless Environment: During our Enrichment and Intervention period, I was able to download novels for free from http://www.gutenberg.org/. This website has free kindle versions of books that are out of copyright and free to use and download. The students would highlight vocabulary words, take notes, summarize chapters, and generate questions directly on the Kindle. This allowed my students to not have to carry folders or notebooks to class. I had another group of students read the novels on the Kindle and have group discussions in the Moodle prgram. The students were able to use both pieces of technology together to have a discussion about the novel "Black Beauty" without having to be in the same room with each other. We then met as a group to go over what was said in the discussion board.

Pen Pal Project: Every year we would recieve a letter from students at Springhouse Middle School before our yearly visit up there. We would respond to that and never hear from them again. This year we are using the Moodle program to take this project to the next level without paper and create a more meaningful experience for our students and the student at Springhouse. Refer to Mr. Haines' page for more information on this distance learning project we have created.
